Ashwell Prince has been appointed vice-captain of the South African Test team, filling the void caused by the resignation of Jacques Kallis.”Prince will be the vice-captain for this tour and the rest of the season’s Test matches until March-April,” team spokesman Owen Smith said. ” [Justin] Kemp has been named vice-captain for the one-day series in Pakistan only.”Kallis had resigned after he was dropped from the team for the ICC World Twenty20, and captain Graeme Smith had expressed his wish for a deputy when the team landed in Pakistan. “I wish I knew [who the vice-captain is]. I’ll let you know when I find out,” Smith said. “But it seems that sort of information is not meant for me.”Prince is a regular in South Africa’s Test squad although he hasn’t found a place in South Africa’s ODI squad after the World Cup. He has been in a rich vein of form in the longer version of the game, ending the 2006-07 season with an average of 60.67 from six Tests. In July 2006, Prince captained South Africa in the absence of Graeme Smith, but they suffered a 2-0 whitewash against Sri Lanka. After the Pakistan tour, South Africa will host New Zealand and West Indies, before traveling to India and Bangladesh.
